BizTalk 2009 Installation - Configuration of BAM Tools and BAM Portal fails - unable to start NS$BAMAlerts service RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm new to BizTalk.  I'm trying to install the Developer edition on a Windows Server 2003 machine with SQL Server 2008 and the Notification Service
components of SQL Server 2005 from here:http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=953752.  The installation succeeds but configuration of BAM Tools (and therefore subsequent components) fails with:

I don't think my problem is the same as the similar post here http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/biztalkgeneral/thread/2b477e8c-b0a6-48f0-8184-36a6f346bce8 as I believe the Notification Service components are present and working.

  • There are a lot of errors in the log about not being able to create the BAM databases. Are you sure the user you logged on as is a local Administrator on the BizTalk and SQL Server systems? Also, did the accounts your specified in the BizTalk configuration have enough rights in SQL Server to create the BAM databases?

I think I remember seeing this error on BizTalk 2006 so it does seem to be different from the other thread you mentioned. Are there any audit log failures for logins? Also, do you see any errors in the SQL logs?

What version of SQL 2008 are you using?

    Thanks,

  • Also make sure you have installed all service packs available of SQL Server 2005 to make sure Notification Services is up to date, especially service pack 2 because it contains the following hotfix for an SSIS/Notification Services issue (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918644).

  • Ben,

The installing user is a domain account that is a member of the local Administrators group.  The BizTalk account is a local account.  Both have the sysadmin role in SQL Server.  I even tried giving the BizTalk account local admin rights - dire warnings but the same end result.

No audit log failures.  I see the following in the SQL Server log:

    2009-05-08 14:01:04.21 Logon       Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 38.
2009-05-08 14:01:04.21 Logon       Login failed for user 'XONE\ogoadi'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database. [CLIENT: 10.124.12.58]

Not sure if this is relevant, as it doesn't occur at the same time as I attempt the (re)configuration process.  State 38 appearently refers to a problem with the initial catalog.

I'm using SQL Server 2008 Developer edition with SP1.

    Thanks.

  • Thiago,

To install NS I followed (more or less) the "To install SQL Notification Services" section of "BTS09_InstallWinXP.doc" from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9C697E02-D1BC-4684-8748-28B3A292D5BF&displaylang=en.  I deviated from this instruction only in that I found if I skipped password entry I didn't get an msi from the self-extractor, so I provided the supplied password.

I ended up with three MSIs: sqlncli.msi, SQLServer2005_NS.msi and SQLServer2005_XMO.msi all of which I installed.  I think these patches should be at SP2 level.  Anyway they install a very lmiited subset of SQL Server 2005 , and if I try to install SP2 it doesn't recognise NS as an installed component and errors if I try to run it!  I do however have "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 notifcation Services" as an item in Add/Remove Programs.

  • On my blog (see http://msinnovations.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!62E68922E47BC425!609.entry), "Jason" commented:

I have been able to get SQL Notifications working with Biztalk 2009 and SQL Server 2008. In the installation doc for BizTalk 2009 under the "Install SQL Notification Services" section there are a couple of hotfixs to download. SQLServer2005_XMO and Yukon_SP2_CU9_SNAC. You receive an email with the download link and a password. The Install doc say to leave the password blank. Enter the password and an msi will be extracted to your directory. Install the msi and for each of the 2 downloads. Extract and install the Yukon_SP2_CU9_SNAC first.

Once this section of the doc is complete you can now configure the BAM Alerts (Which will create the Databases. You will have to ensure that your BAM users (BAM Notifications Services User, BAM Management Web Servcies User) have the correct access to the database tables. Check out this link for windows groups and user accounts (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa577661.aspx)

Did you get the Yukon_SP2_CU9_SNAC file and install this?

    Thanks,

  • Ben,

Yes, I did install the hotfixes - having discovered that the MSIs weren't extracted if I followed the "skip the password" instruction.  I installed:

SQLServer2005_NS.msi (this is the Yukon_SP2_CU9_SNAC file)
    SQLServer2005_XMO.msi
    sqlncli.msi

My installation is single-host, so I expected the installation to create all the relevant accounts and give them the correct privileges.  After configuration fails, I can see none of the accounts you refer to, so they were either never created or subsequently rolled back.

  • I have a couple of suspicions but am not sure exactly what your next step should be. It feels like the problem is that the databases are not able to be created. I would try running a repair on your BizTalk installation (Add/Remove programs, modify, then repair) to see if this resolves anything.

If this does not work, I would call Microsoft Product Support - something seems missing from the steps.

    Sorry,
