Creating Data Access Layer for connecting to multiple data sources RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to create a Data Access Layer which connects to multiple datasources like Databases, SharePoint List, any other third party systems. Databases again could be Oracle, Postgres, Sql etc. I need to develop it as a modular plug-in such that in case a new module is added I should be able to extend the existing implementation without changing the existing code.

This Data Access Layer will consumed by a WCF Service? What is the best technology to develop such a modular plug-in based Data Access Layer. I have come across a number of options like

    1. .Net Providers (Custom Providers)

    2. Dependency Injection

    3. MEF

    4. Abstract Factory Pattern

Please let me know what could the best approach to implement this?

  • As always, it depends. Can you use a common feature set, such as Standard SQL to access them or do you wish to use specific functionality they offer? Essentially 2-4 are the same choice.
