Controlling a Drilldown Action in VS 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • For simplicity sake, let's say I have a fact table that only has three records in it for the same employee.  In the cube I've created a measure to do a distinct count on employees in the fact table, so it will currently return a count of 1.  This part is all working great....the next part is where I'm having a problem.  I want to create a drill-down action to show the employee details (ie. Name, Deprt., etc.), and when I create it, it wants to show the information for the employee three times, which I'm assuming is one time for reach record in my fact table.

Is there a way to control this so that it only shows one drill-down detail record per employee?  I'm assuming I'd have to write some MDX for the optional part of the drill-down action, but I'm still in the junior stages of MDX and not even sure where to begin...

  • Hi puffster,

Analysis Services supports three types of actions:

    • Report. Returns a Reporting Services report that is associated with the cube data on which the action is based.
    • Drillthrough. Returns a result set that provides detailed information related to the cube data on which the action is based.
    • Standard. One of five action subtypes that are based on the specified cube data:
      •Dataset: Returns a mutlidimensional dataset.
•Proprietary: Returns a string that can be interpreted by a client application.
      •Rowset: Returns a tabular rowset.
•Statement: Returns a command string that can be run by a client application.
•URL: Returns a URL that can be opened by a client application, usually a browser.

If you want to enable the drilldown action, I think you can try to define a report action in your cube, which takes the users to a Reporting Services report. So, we can get rid of the duplicate record if we define a drilldown action for the report.

  • Good call, I was wanting to control it via drillthrough, but just calling a second report should work and will also give me a little more control over it's layout...

    Thanks!!
