Project Schedule Status Based on Milestore RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

Our client want to track the project schedule/time status (in Project Center using custom filed and graphical indicators) based on the milestones defined in the project. Is it possible to have the formula which can give the project status based on project milestones.

    Thanks in advance, Taj

  • Indeed Taj, you can use the native finish variance field (based on the baseline finish date) and copy it into a task custom field if and only if task is a milestone. Then rolling up the sum at summary rows, you have a global milestones variance that could be displayed at project level with a graphical indicator.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Taj,

You could for example have a project Enterprise custom field (so it can be displayed as a graphical indicator in the Project Center views) that gives the % of complete milestones versus total number of milestones. Depending on the % value, you could disply a green/yellow/red indicator.

For sure there is a simpler way to do that but here is what I found:

    • Create a task field (using this method) that returns 1 for every milestone
    • Create another task field that returns 1 for every complete milestone
    • Create a project field that calculate the % based on the 2 above fields

Note also that MS Project 2013 proposed a milestone report in the new report feature.

Be aware that this type of indicator (like milestones trend analysis) DO NOT give any relevant information about project completion but only about milestones completion. I mean that a single milestone can require a huge amount of work whereas another one could just be a 1h work document writing.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Guillaume,

Thanks for your reply, normally milestone status will be based on whether there is a deviation from planned milestone finish date. That is if  we get the sum of finish variance of  all milestone and compare with the total duration can give the correct status of milestone . Is it possible to get sum of finish variance of all milestone in project custom field to show the graphical indicator.

    Thanks in advance, taj
