Kinect as machine vision RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does the Kinect have the ability to act as a quality inspection camera?

I have a production line full of glass bottles that requires a manual inspection point to check for damaged / chipped tops. Is this something that I could program the Kinect to inspect for me?

Just wondering if this is possible before investing any time and money. Cheers.

  • Honestly I don't know. You'd have to take a look with one of the SDK's tools which give you a way to visualize the raw data from the sensor and see for yourself. I do have doubts though. Glass is reflective. And the way you get depth data in Kinect is through IR. So if it's gonna reflect the IR then the beams won't go back in a proper way. Perhaps if the IR emitter is looking at a chip head on, it might provide results but , like I said, better to just test it yourself. Find a Kinect v2, hook it on a pc and install the SDK. Then open Kinect Studio and see what it gives you when you switch the feed to IR.
