Windows 10 Software Driver installation issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • Below is my inf file, created by the kmdf sample code.
When I install this inf ,

neither the driver is copied to system32\drivers folder
nor the registry entries are created.
Is there any issue in this inf ?
To overcome this , I added the registry entries manually and copied the driver file manually to system32\drivers.
To start the driver, in command prompt I entered the command "net start RexRefDriver".
I am getting the error "service name is invalid".
This is a software only driver.
I am not installing this against any device.
I simple double clicked the inf file to install the driver.
Is there any issue in the inf file?
Is there anything I am missing in the driver installation step?

  • https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/install/inf-defaultinstall-section You will need to remove the pnp directives of the inf as well

  • This is a pnp inf. Double click on the inf means the driver package is added to the driver store and then the OS checks if the package is the next match on any existing pnp device. You can use devcon install to install a software only pnp driver. If you want an inf that just installs a driver that you can net start/stop, you need a [DefaultInstall] section
