Reloading Operating systems on the same or different machines RRS feed

  • Question

  • Am new to MSDN and have a question about reloading any of the software on the same or different machines. Is there a way to deactivate and installation on say Windows 7 when I no longer need it or am wanting to test it on a new platform? And can a retail copy of Win 7 be deactivated?

  • WVJMiller, sorry, no Windows cannot be "Deactivated" once it has been Activated.  The activation process is permanent, however many keys in MSDN do come with more than one activation so you should be able to continue using your keys.

In our help section here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/cc137104.aspx, we do recommend not using Activation on machines that you will be reimaging regularly: "When activation is required, many products allow you to install and use the product without activation for 30 days or more. If you re-image your computers frequently (i.e. once every 30 days), consider NOT activating the product."

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks,
    Mike
