How to get SVR2008 Standard Downgrade for R2 DataCenter? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have several small servers  running Windows Server 2008 Standard-32 bit that I am consolidating as virtual machines onto one server.  My server has a Windows Server 2008R2 Datacenter license that was purchased with the server.  I have the COA with physical & virtual keys but they are for Server 2008 R2.  The virtual key does not work with my Server 2008 Standard virtual machines that now require activation after converting them to VMs.  How do I get a downgrade key for the Datacenter license I purchased so that I can activate Windows Server on my VMs?

Since I did not buy Datacenter outright, I do not have an Activation Number to add to the Volume Licensing inventory (where I could then generate my own key).  All I have is the COA.  Reinstalling the OS to use the key I have is not an option.

Calls to Microsoft and the OEM have me going in circles but the bottom line seems to be "call Microsoft".  So how do I ask for what I need?
