Another Failed to Install .net framework on vista home RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've been trying to get a version of vs 2008 to install on my computer but it keeps hanging up on install .net 3.5. Installing just that I still have a problem.

    Here is the verbose logs collected with the log collection tool

    http://cid-08e2cf744125aaa1.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/VS2008

    From the dd_dotnetfx35install.txt log it seem to be failing here

    [11/11/08,18:13:20] Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 'package': ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** : Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 'package'. MSI returned error code 1603

    but 1603 is just the "setup failed" error code as far as I can tell so that doesn't help much.  If someone could help me out I'd appreciate it greatly.

  • With Aaron Stebner's help (Give that man a raise!)  I've figured out my problem.

    From your logs, this is the command that is failing during .NET Framework 3.5 setup:

    11/11/08 18:13:18 DDSet_Status: CustomActionData: "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\WFServicesReg.exe" /c /v /m /i

    This is the exact error information:

    DDSet_Error: CConfigEntry::RefreshConfigFile could not load _spConfigDoc path=C:\Users\Sean\AppData\Local\Temp\WSFDB52.tmp isSuccessful=0 Error code: 0x1
    DDSet_Error: CFxInstaller::SetupHttpHandlers handlerElement.Initialize failed. cswWebConfigPath=C:\Users\Sean\AppData\Local\Temp\WSFDB52.tmp Error code: 0x80004005
    DDSet_Error: CFxInstaller::SetupComponents SetupHttpHandlers failed. Error code: 0x80004005
    DDSet_Error: Setup failed. Error code: 0x80004005
    DDSet_CARetVal: -2147467259
    DDSet_Exit: WFServicesReg.exe
    11/11/08 18:13:18 DDSet_Status: Process returned -2147467259
    11/11/08 18:13:18 DDSet_Error: The Commandline '"C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\WFServicesReg.exe" /c /v /m /i' returned non-zero value: -2147467259.

    I'm not familiar with this exact error message, so I'm not sure what to suggest to try to fix it.  There is a description of what this tool does at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb924408.aspx - it appears to be modifying some of the information in the file %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\web.config.

    These .config files are not part of the Windows resource protection so using the SFC tool didn't help.  I delete the machine.config  and web.config in the above directory replacing them with copies from the *.config.default files that where present.

    After this I was able to install .net framework and vs2008

    Hope this helps someone else and  that had to be the most annoying install evar.....

  • Brilliant! After hours of attempts using other suggestions, this one (as stated above) worked:
    1. Delete machine.config  and web.config (actually, I renamed them as "old.machine..." etc.) in the directory "%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\"
    2. R
    eplace them with copies of the default files -- *.config.default -- also in that directory.

  • Where exactly did you find the *config file to replace the web.config and machine.config?
