One easy way to make sure that you don't have this problem is continue to use Visual Studio 2010 for creating new EDMX files. That way you know you will not run into any problems with WCF RIA Services. Once the EDMX files are created you shouldn't have a problem opening the solution in VS 2012. I personally have been managing a single solution with both Visual Studio 2010 and Visual Studio 2012 at the same time recently because VS 2012 is faster but I need VS 2010 to remote debug a server that doesn't have the VS2012 remote debugging tools installed. So far I have not run into any problems doing this.

I am still hoping that a better solution will be forthcoming.
