Migrate from Win8 to 8.1, ‘the application could not be started’ RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

After migration my Win 8 Store App to Win 8.1, build success, deploy success, but when launched, an error dialog will always  popup, shows :

"the application could not be started. Do you want to view information about this issue ?"

After I click 'Yes', another popup appears, and the error info is :

"Unable to activate Windows Store app "AppName". The ProcessName.exe process started, but the activation request failed with error 'The app didn't start'."

(the above bold string "AppName & ProcessName.exe" is only placeholder for my own app info)

I also check EventViewfor more info, but no more useful info found.

so please help to check why i can not start my store app ?.

  • Hello Prashant H Phadke,

That forum thread did not apply to me.

My project are all located in my local physical disk.

I guess one potential reason, hope it can help you track my question: My Win8 store app is already listed in Win Store, and the app has got Microsoft ApplicationID, Name, publisher info from Win store.

    When I migrate the project to Win8.1, all these info are carried with the same copy, when delpoy my project, an folder will be created in : C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\Packages\**ID**.**AppName**_**someId**\;

"**ID**.**AppName**_**someId**" is a placeholder about my app which is the same as my Win 8 project.

Is it the reason why my app can not start from that deployed folder ?

  • So, if I understand you correctly you are saying that:

    - Your Windows 8.1 machine has a retail Windows 8.0 app installed from the Store.

    - When you try to deploy the recompiled app, it deploys fine, but when you run it, it gives you an error?

If that's the case, then I suppose it could be the problem because there can only be one version of the app running on the machine at one time.

What happens if you uninstall your retail app? Does the debug version start fine?
