Will 1.6.0 work with Kinect for Xbox, and is there more detailed info? RRS feed

  • Question

  • In the FAQ it says that "Applications designed for Kinect for Windows won't work with Kinect for Xbox devices," but I'm wondering if I can still write for the Kinect for Xbox.

Is there a technical comparison table anywhere that details the differences between Kinect for Windows vs. Kinect for Xbox?

Is there a list of the SDK functionality that relies on Kinect for Windows hardware?

    Thanks!

  • Their is no near mode on xbox kinect so you have to stand farther back. I can not remember the other differences off my head between xbox and windows kinect. The blog at the top of this forum states that v1.6 is "backwards compatible". So you can use v1.5 code with v1.6 kinect sdk (excludes anything before v1 source code acccording to blog).  You cannot use the runtime though with xbox kinect and xbox kinect can only be used for testing/debugging purposes with your kinect. It cannot be used commerically with kinect for windows sdk. Xbox kinect is only to test applications in v1 sdk and above (can use kinect for windows also for testing).

P.S. i've been testing my source code for my popular kinectmultipoint project with a xbox kinect and when I finish it I plan on buying a kinect for windows myself. The project page is here:

    http://kinectmultipoint.codeplex.com

It focuses on multiple emulated mice created when a kinect is plugged in (if 2 kinects are plugged in they each support 6 people so tweleve mouse devices are created).

You can use every functionality in the sdk with xbox kinect in visual studio while debugging and if you have installed the full sdk instead of kinect runtime.

Please see above responses in first paragraph.
