How To Make Multiple Ribbon Instances in a COM AddIn RRS feed

  • Question

  • We’re developing an Outlook 2010 COM AddIn and implement a custom Ribbon that varies, depending on the MailItem selected in the Explorer, or the MailItem viewed in the Inspector.  When several of these windows are open, the context of one window impacts the appearance of our custom Ribbon Tab across all the windows.  We suspect this is so because it looks like there is but one global Ribbon object.  On the Activate() event of the Explorer and Inspector windows, we reevaluate the MailItem context of that window and adjust the appearance (enabling and disabling buttons) of our Ribbon Tab.

Is there a better way?  Is it possible to have unique Ribbon objects among each of the Explorer and Inspector windows?  If we could, then once the context was set for a given window, it would not impact the appearance of our Ribbon tab in other windows.

  • The approach you're using is the way to do it.
