A 401.1 error usually means bad username or bad password.  If this is happening when you are allowing anonymous access it could mean the anonymus user password specified in the IIS MMC does not match what is set for the account in user manage.

Did you configure IIS to be Windows authentication, when you really wanted anonymous?  It would help to know exactly what you did when you "fixed it with reg fix."  Also what you do to get this error.

Have you turned on anoymous access?

Do you want it to ask for a user authentication?

The error was that there was not enough storage so i fixed it with some IRSPstacksize? somethng like that.

And for the second guy I do not want authentication since there was no auth before so anyone could acces it..

So what can I do about the password ?

I am just doing work for someone and I cannot continue. Thanks tomkmvp

And I have full access to server I just dont know how to fix it.

And by user manage do you mean the Account which I use to log=on remotly to the server? If yes then I tried to enter that password now in the anonymous login and password and I still get 401 error. This is really strange how it happened by itself

EDIT: indeed you are right! I changed password for any random website that is not being used and that is the case!! I dont know what is the main password so what can i do ?

    Change it to something known.

And by user manage do you mean ...

I mean USER MANAGER, where local accounts are created and managed on the server.  : )

Hi thanks again. I figured that out so all the websites gave me the same error right after I changed it. But the website I really need is giving me still the same thing. What could be the reason of this?

To give you example that it is not something caused by the files on the website I cleared everything from the folder and I left index.html

I changed password and still same thing

  • User-2064283741 posted

    by default in

    <windows dir>\System32\LogFiles\<web site identifier>

but you can find it for sure with

    1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools
    2. Run Internet Information Services (IIS).
    3. Find your Web site under the tree on the left.
    4. Right-click on it and choose Properties.
    5. On the Web site tab, you will see an option near the bottom that says "Active Log Format." Click on the Properties button.
    6. At the bottom of the General Properties tab, you will see a box that contains the log file directory and the log file name. The full log path is comprised of the log file directory plus the first part of the log file name.

Oh logging was not enabled on this website. I will enable and see what I get

but what would you say is causing this ? Also maybe I could make a new site of course first delete it and then make it the same again but how would I do it ? just delete it off IIS and then make new again?

Not sure what else to tell you.

If you're getting a 401.1 with anonymous access then there's something wrong with the anonymous configuration.  It's either a bad username or password for the anonymous account in the IIS MMC. IIRC this also shows up in the server's System event log as an event ID 100.
