Cannot Create a LightSwitch App in VS 2015 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am running Windows 10 with VS 2015 Update 3, and I cannot create a LightSwitch app in VS 2015 (desktop or HTML).  When I try to create a LS project, I receive a series of messages indicating various LS packages cannot be loaded, with a final error message indicating the following:

...Application1.lsxtproj cannot be opened because its project type (.lsxtproj) is not supported by this version of the application.

To open it, please use a version that supports this type of project.

    Here is my Activity.xml file.

It's worth noting that I receive this issue on Window 7 with VS 2015 Update 2.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Shane

  • I was able to create a LightSwitch project in VS 2015 Update 3.  As I mentioned above, I install VS 2015 Update 3 & Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2015 Update 2, but I still couldn't open a LS project.  Then I repaired the VS 2015 installation...still couldn't open a LS project; however, when I opened VS 2015, I noticed ODT needed an update (see the version listed 2 posts above this one; ODT v14.0.23513), so I update ODT a 2nd time.  After updating ODT a 2nd time, I tried to create a new LS project, but I received a message indicating Silverlight SDK needed to be installed; after installing SL SDK, I was finally able to create a LS project

    Current ODT Version:

    Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise 2015
    Version 14.0.25425.01 Update 3
    Microsoft .NET Framework

  • Hello,

    Thanks for the reply.

I have Office Developer Tools for VS 2015 Update 2 (v14.0.23513) installed.

I first noticed this issue while I was running VS 2015 Update 2 with Office Developer Tools for VS 2015.  While researching this issue, I found this VS 2015VS 2015 Update 2 RC Known Issues and Fixed BugsUpdate 2 release notes article indicating that there are known issues with LightSwitch in VS 2015 Update 2 RC, so I updated to VS 2015 Update 3 with Office Developer Tools for VS 2015 Update 2; this was of no help.  In addition to updating VS & ODT, here are a few actions I have taken to remedy the situation (none of them fixed the issue).

    • From the Developer Command Prompt for VS 2015, I ran the following commands (separately): devenv /ResetSettings & devenv /ResetSkipPkgs
    • I've tried repairing the VS 2015 install

Please see the list below of installed components for my VS 2015 install on Windows 10, and let me know if I am missing something or if I am using the incorrect version of a component.

  • Your list of components looks fine.

However, while I have a license for the Enterprise version of Visual Studio I uninstalled it and installed:

Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition from:

    https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs

    Then installed: Office Developer Tools.

This is what works for me. Perhaps, if that works for you, after that, you can try installing the Enterprise version of Visual Studio.

  • Thanks again...I'll give Community Edition a try.

Am I correct in assuming you started using the Community Edition because you had a similar issue with VS 2015 Enterprise?

    Thanks
