Ongoing Issue with Azure SQL and Web App Backups RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • The Microsoft Azure Team has investigated the reported issue of "orphaned database copies created during a backup". This issue occurred due to a planned upgrade by SQL Azure to adjust the threshold for default databases to use higher compatibility levels. Unfortunately, the Web Apps backup service hadn't been configured to meet this new compatibility threshold. This change results in failed database exports.

Engineers are working on a fix to upgrade the Web Apps backup service to a level that is compatible with the new thresholds put in place by SQL Azure and expect that fix to be in place within days. Until the permanent fix is in place engineers have recommended the following workarounds:

Option 1: Customers can manually downgrade the compatibility level of their database to 130 or lower, which can be done with an ALTER DATABASE query as described here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/t-sql/statements/alter-database-transact-sql-compatibility-level.

Option 2: Remove the database settings from the backup  and use the Azure SQL snapshots instead until a final fix is in place.

Please be assured that we are working on improvements in release planning between our service platforms.

    We apologize for any convenience.
