Developer Edition and Standard Edition instance on the same server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is SQL Server 2008...I have a few Standard Edition instances of SQL Server on my database server and I'd like to install a Developer Edition instance on the same server to test out some features only available in Enterprise Edition to see if the move to EE will be worthwhile.

I installed a new instance using the Developer Edition software, but when I run select @@version in my new instance, it appears that it's still running Standard Edition and I'm not able to create the partitions I'm trying to test in SSAS.

Should I be able to install a new instance of Developer Edition on the same server where I already have Standard Edition installed?

  • Hi,

    This should be possible http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143694.aspx

But I never try this because:

"SQL Server 2008 Developer lets developers build any kind of application on top of SQL Server. It includes all the functionality of SQL Server 2008 Enterprise, but is licensed for use as a development and test system, not as a production server. SQL Server 2008 Developer is an ideal choice for people who build and test applications. You can upgrade SQL Server 2008 Developer for production use."

    Hope this helps.
