  • Hi,

windows embedded compact isn't dead but WEC 2013 will be the last available version.

The team will continue to work for future updates and patches. Remember that Microsoft give you 10 years of support on this product so you can develop your application having support untile 2023 ;-)

Embedded OS is never change frequently. Today there are a lot of devices with Windows CE 5 or 6 so I think that if you need a real time OS like Windows Embedded Compact you can use it for your industrial application.

Of course you can develop application in native code or .Net Compact Framework 3.9. No support for WinRT and/or UWP as for Windows 10.

  • Do any of the Windows 10 IoT offerings have a hard-real time component or is it safe to say with the end of WEC 2013 Microsoft will be getting out of the RTOS game?

  • I think so. WEC2013 is the only Microsoft OS with real time capabilities.

  • minor comment to Paolo: WEC2013 and all its predecessors up to and including CE 3.0 have real-time capabilities...
