How many way data transfer by web service

i heard that legacy web service (asmx) by default transfer data from one point to another point by xml. default protocol any web service follows is soap ? is it true that soap is default protocol for web service.

i also heard that binary data can be transfer by web service from one pc to another pc. so if i need to send binary data transfer then when a developer need to do ? what protocol is used when binary data will be tranfer by web service from one pc to another pc ?

any body please expalin about the different approach for tranferring data through web service or redirect me to few good articles. thanks

XML is choosen as the universal data format transfer.

using webservice you can transfer data with multiple format.

1. plain text

2. xml

3.json

4.object

etc.
