Data warehouse Development tool for Azure SQL Data Warehouse RRS feed

  • Question

  • Could anyone recommend a graphical tool for developing a DW on Azure SQL Data Warehouse (ASDW) ? I'm looking for a tool that could show ER-diagram (i.e. PK / FK, Column type, 1-to-N relationship etc.) specifically that work on Azure SQL Data Warehouse platform. Something like MySQL workbench

    https://dev.mysql.com/doc/workbench/en/wb-creating-eer-diagram.html

I have tried Oracle Data Modeler but it seems not compatible with ASDW, generating no columns within the graph at all

I have tried Microsoft SSMS 2016, it successfully connected but seems No ability to generate graph (I read online there is something like "Database Diagram" but no this option in my SSMS

I not yet try Visual Studio 2015 + SSDT option since it requires license, does anyone know it fulfill my requirement?

Also looked on Microsoft Data Management Partner on Azure SQL Data warehouse but they didn't specify the ability with the graph.

Any suggestion will be appreciated. Building DW of course include schema design and a GUI is critical to this. Thank you.

  • hi Mike

If you want to start off with a DWH ,assuming you have your Bus Matrix etc sorted out, you can start off with the Kimball spreadsheets.

    http://www.kimballgroup.com/data-warehouse-business-intelligence-resources/books/microsoft-data-warehouse-dw-toolkit/

You could start off your work and then slowly procure a tool like ER Studio (if you have enough budget).

    Hope that helps

    Cheers
