Installing .Net Framework Error: 0x800f080c Feature name netfx3 is unknown

    Question

  • When I run the .Net Framework 3.5 Installer I get the following error: Windows couldn't complete the requested changes. When I try to enable .Net framework in the command prompt I get the following error:

cmd.exe dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:netfx3 /all /limitaccess /source:D:\sources\sxs Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool Version: 10.0.18885.1001 Image Version: 10.0.18885.1001 Error: 0x800f080c Feature name netfx3 is unknown. A Windows feature name was not recognized. Use the /Get-Features option to find the name of the feature in the image and try the command again.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

The link to the log file: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Avqi6Pt1BGP3gbsEeBSOAHC3yj5l1A

When I go to Windows Features, my list looks like this. https://i.stack.imgur.com/4Xqdc.png

My whole .Net Framework is completely gone. https://i.stack.imgur.com/gPicj.png  (except I managed to install 1.1 and 2.0, while windows may have reinstalled 4.7, but it still doesn't work)

This is how registry looks like. https://i.imgur.com/0XKaNRk.png

My applications like paint.net, discord, UDK, UE4 and Windows Troubleshooter don't work.

I tried to install .net Framework using Server Manager, but that also requires .Net Framework.

    UT3 Editor works though :)

  • To run this application, you first must install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework:

      v4.0.30319

Contact your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .NET Framework.

  • Hi kevincrans,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

Checked the snapshot, please tell me which is node you expended in “turn windows feature on or off”? see my snapshot, it shows the “.NET extensibility 3.5/4.7” is listed in “Application Development” node.

Certainly, when you want to install .Net 4.0 on your PC, you should select “.NET Framework 4.7 Advanced Services” option, aren’t you?

If you did, but nothing happened except error. Please un-select ““.NET Framework 4.7 Advanced Services” and close “turn windows feature on or off”. Navigate to registry to confirm which version .net framework are installed on your PC: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/migration-guide/how-to-determine-which-versions-are-installed.

    • For .NET Framework 4, the Version entry is under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v4.0\Client subkey, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v4.0\Full subkey, or under both subkeys.

If none of version that higher than 4.0, or you just installed .net 3.5. you could choose download and install .net 4.0 standalone installer by manually once again: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718&ranMID=24542&ranEAID=kXQk6*ivFEQ&ranSiteID=kXQk6.ivFEQ-4yrA2mREoBhCDJ3Jxx.80Q&epi=kXQk6.ivFEQ-4yrA2mREoBhCDJ3Jxx.80Q&irgwc=1&OCID=AID681541_aff_7593_1243925&tduid=(ir__ceh1pabje0kfr3wn0h20wk909m2xmr66surd6ace00)(7593)(1243925)(kXQk6.ivFEQ-4yrA2mREoBhCDJ3Jxx.80Q)()&irclickid=_ceh1pabje0kfr3wn0h20wk909m2xmr66surd6ace00

Also, here is a repair tool would be helpful if you encounter issue with the setup of .net framework: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135&ranMID=24542&ranEAID=kXQk6*ivFEQ&ranSiteID=kXQk6.ivFEQ-gfhNSB.z4ekMshbKg.fapQ&epi=kXQk6.ivFEQ-gfhNSB.z4ekMshbKg.fapQ&irgwc=1&OCID=AID681541_aff_7593_1243925&tduid=(ir__ceh1pabje0kfr3wn0h20wk909m2xmr66svrd6ace00)(7593)(1243925)(kXQk6.ivFEQ-gfhNSB.z4ekMshbKg.fapQ)()&irclickid=_ceh1pabje0kfr3wn0h20wk909m2xmr66svrd6ace00

Please feel free to let me know if it unblocks you

  • Hi kevincrans,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

I cannot reproduce this issue in my side right now, please share us the specific system version. BTW, did you update your system recently? If you restore PC, did this issue persist?

Firstly, based on the error “name netfx3 is unknown.”. run command line “dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:netfx3/all /limitaccess /source:D:\sources\sxs” is reach to feature “.net framework 3.5”, not “.net extensibility 3.5”.

Please run “dism /online /get-features” to confirm the correct name and run DISM command again. meanwhile share the list of feature and system info to us for check.

    Looking forward your reply.

    Sincerely

    May

  • Hi kevincrans,

See your system info: windows 10 pro insider preview (18885).

Honestly, a part of customers met same issue before so that I reported to MS DC site: https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/problem/421852/windows-10-64-bit-1809-net-framework-4-and-472-can.html. This situation occurs randomly in windows insider system itself. As member said, A Microsoft Community Forums user had this condition arise after a Cumulative Update on Insider Build 18362.30 (May 2019 Feature Update). Could you update your OS for a testing?

Meanwhile, please “follow” it and add a comment to describe your issue again. it is better to urge product team to think about it.

    Sorry for your inconvenience

  • Thank you for your response, I will stop insider preview and update to the next Stable Release, if that doesn't work, I will wait for the Stable release after that and reinstall windows since you need a newer build to keep your data.

I've already updated while the issue continued to persist earlier, so there is your answer.
