Visual Studio 2013 Update 5 crashes even when I'm doing nothing with it

    Question

  • Hi.
My Visual Studio 2013 Update 5 is crashing randomly. It crashes even when I just load a solution and leave it for some minutes.

It is very annoying and I can't focus on my work.

My Visual Studio is Ultimate 2013 and version 12.0.40629.00 Update 5.
My OS 64bit windows 7, and I have Codemaid, CUDA 6.5 Wizrads, Nvidia Nsight as well as Common Visual Studio Ultimate tools.

It would be very appreciated if someone can tell me how to fix it.

    Thanks.

It seemed like the problem was solved, but actually it is not :(.

I did repair and removed every removable extra plugins and extensions, but still it crashes randomly.

So far, only starting with /safemode switch doesn't make crashes.

  • My suspicion is that an add-in may be to blame.  First step is to disable/remove them and see if you still get random crashing.

Launch visual studio from the command line using devenv.exe /SafeMode and see if you experience random crashes.

  • Hi jk,

    Thanks for your post.

    Please try the following ways:

1.Try to restore Visual Studio default settings using this command: “devenv.exe /resetsettings”.

    2. Follow Wyck's suggestion to run your Visual Studio in safe mode to Check whether some add-ins and extensions affect the building progress (devenv /safemode)

If above suggestions still no help. I suppose there might be something wrong with your Visual Studio 2013.

In this case, I suggest you could repair your VS2013 then try it again, may be the issue will be solved.

    Best Regards,

    Lake Xiao

  • Thank you Xiao.

I followed yours and wyck's advice, I ran safemode and I did repair my VS2013. Now it seems ok.
