  • You can use any editor that can output appropriate files. The one you have and are familiar with will likely give the best results. If the only thing you need it for is creating your icon then there are many free or inexpensive options. If you don't already know how to use them, I'd avoid powerful programs with a steep learning curve since you likely don't need the power for this use.

    The in-box Paint app will work, or you can use Gimp, Paint.Net, Photoshop, etc. Personally, I prefer vector graphics programs such as Xara Xtreme, Illustrator, Inkscape, etc. for creating the more iconic look recommended for Windows Store apps (and many vector graphics programs can export XAML to use in your app as well).
