ClickOnce-based Excel Add-in installer and MS-SMS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Given an Excel add-in developed with VSTO 2010 with a ClickOnce-based installer generated from the VS publish feature: can sys admins deploy this add-in to Windows desktops using Microsoft System Management Server? Thanks.

  • Hi Alex,

I am not a MSM master. That is why I would recommend asking Microsoft System Management Server specialists instead.

You need to configure the installation program on the per-user basis.

  • Hello Alex,

Yes, they can. The Office Solutions Development Overview article states the following:

Use ClickOnce or Windows Installer to deploy solutions that you create by using the Office development tools in Visual Studio. ClickOnce deployment enables you to create self-updating solutions that can be installed and run with minimal user interaction. Windows Installer (.msi) files can be easily distributed to end user computers, or distributed by using Systems Management Server (SMS).

The Deploying an Office Solution by Using ClickOnce article describes the required steps needed to be made for distributing add-ins silently. Note, the VSTO runtime should be installed on the end user PCs.

  • Thanks.

You say "Yes". But, my read of the quote is "No". It looks like only an msi based installer can be used with SMS. The text is ambiguous. WDYT?

  • Hi Alex,

It looks like I wasn't clear.

Yes, you can use the ClickOnce technology for installing add-ins silently. To get the job done you need to use the VSTOinstaller.exe utility (the installer tool for Office solutions ). Please see the Create a custom installer section from the Deploying an Office Solution by Using ClickOnce article.

  • Thanks for the quick reply. I am familiar with the "silent" option using VSTOinstaller.exe. However, I am not very familiar with Microsoft System Management Server. Can Microsoft System Management Server be configured to perform such a silent installation of a ClickOnce VSTO Excel add-in?

Will it properly install the add-in for the specific target user? I ask because it seems that one cannot install such an add-in for all users.

    Thanks!
