Cannot install .NET framework RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was having issues on my Windows Storage Server 2003 R2. I could not install updates to .NET framework. So, I followed the instructions here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/03/07/8108332.aspx. This did not help. So, I used the .NET framework cleanup tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx. Still no success. Now when I try to install .NET framework v2, the installer crashes and I get these errors in the event log:

I have tried installing it from Windows update, WSUS and a direct download.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Please provide the following:

Which .NET Framework versions do you have installed? To find out, run this tool:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx

and post the first ~40 lines of output here.

From your narrative, you removed .NET Framework 2.0, then attempted to reinstall it?

Your log excerpt refers to "Framework64\v4.0.30319", not 2.0.

Please provide the link to the .NET Framework you tried to install, and provire complete install logs as follows:

Please collect your install logs logs with this:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E0DA314F-6216-4A18-BC6B-7D29CF83AF20&displaylang=e&displaylang=en

After you run Collect.exe, you'll find vslogs.cab in your %temp% directory. Please upload vslogs.cab to a public site, like SkyDrive, and post the link here.

  • Hi Daryl,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

If you find any version of .NET Framework is corrupt, you can try to repair it first  in Control Panel. If it does not work, I recommend you repair it via command line: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2009/04/16/9553804.aspx

If the repair does not work, please try to uninstall it and reinstall it. You can uninstall .NET Framework via the command line I listed above. After you uninstall them successfully, you can try to reinstall them. For installing .NET Framework 2.0/3.0/3.5, I recommend you setup .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 directly which will automatically install .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. You can download .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 from: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=25150

For .NET Framework 4, you can download the it here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17718

If you have any other concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best Regards,

  • I see from your .NET Framework Verifier output that you have no .NET Frameworks installed on your system.

In reviewing your vslogs, cab, I can find no log for .NET Framework 2.0 installation dated later than August 16, 2011. I'm not sure why that's so. Perhaps Alexander can shed some light on that issue. Is there any possibility that your system clock is not set correctly?

I do think you should follow Alexander's suggestion:

" I recommend you setup .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 directly which will automatically install .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. You can download .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 from: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=25150"

Once you have done that, please report back with results and a new vslogs.cab, if needed.

  • I think the reason you don't see any installations is because the installation crashes at the EULA.

I believe the system clock is correct.

I did try to install 3.5 SP1. See my previous post.

  • Hi Daryl,

Based on the date of your log, I recommend you try the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installation again following these steps:

    ·         Please download .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 from: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=25150

    ·         Complete or dismiss Windows Updates before installation (but turn on Windows Update service).

    ·         Clean up your “%temp%” folder (Start>>Run>>%temp%)

    ·         Check if there are any anti-virus or antispyware applications running. Make sure they are turned off during installation.

    ·         Run the setup file with Administrator privileges: Right-click the installer>>Run as administrator.

If the problem still exists after these steps, could you please collect the log for me?

Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.

If you have any other concerns, please feel free to let me know.

  • Hi Daryl,

    From your log:

    MSI (s) (10:84) [12:35:02:482]: Internal Exception during install operation: 0xc0000005 at 0x000006427EE83C3F.

MSI (s) (10:84) [12:35:02:482]: Internal MSI error. Installer terminated prematurely.
