Feedback on Crescent RRS feed

  • Question

  • I finally had a chance to play around with my demo installs and overall I'm pretty impressed with the product. I feel that Microsoft may be targeting the wrong audience with the SharePoint Enterprise requirements.  To me Crescent would be more valuable for small to medium businesses that need simple BI where BI doesn't exist today.  I could see even see Crescent as a desktop app to report on PowerPivot. Then again SharePoint itself isn't that expensive if you can go the CAL route, but if Crescent is only in SQL Enterprise it will be the kiss of death.  I'm also worried that Microsoft is ignoring the large mobile device audience.  I hope that Microsoft moves to a faster development cycle for at least the BI portions of the SQL platform.

    PROS

    • Easy to quickly build impressive reports
    • Interactive charts
    • Easy to create interface to large dataset (example passenger traffic by country, click through each country)

    CONS

    • Measures don't appear to be sortable on charts or in tables (deal killer for financial comparisons)
    • Export & Print appear to be missing
    • Lack of Gauges / Maps / Bar Charts
    • Painful to get setup from scratch
    • Depends on SharePoint Enterprise which is expensive and complex vs. reporting services/tableau/qlik
    • Mobile support on Android or IOS????
    • Will Crescent target existing SSAS cubes at some point??

  • Hi SWAPA,

we appreciate that you took time and wrote up feedback!

Could you perhaps elaborate on "Lack of Bar Charts"? There are column and bar charts available in Denali CTP3.

Regarding the development cycle, I don't know how closely you watched our past releases, but I can assure you for BI it is a fast cycle going forward.  As to your list of cons, I'd recommend to stay tuned. You may see a few positive surprises in coming months, and beyond.

    Cheers,
    Robert

  • Thank you for the feedback.  We do appreciate it.  I'd also encourage you to file these issues on our Connect web site so that we can track them and their votes by other members of the community.

There are still some features being added to Crescent for the Denali release.  We can't comment on all of them at this point, but here is what we can offer.

    1.  Sorting is coming on both tables and charts.  It's not in CTP3.

    2.  Gauges\Map They won't be in Denali.

    3.  Crescent will eventually work with SSAS cubes.  This was announced earlier this year.

    Regards,

    Sean

  • Got it.  Thanks for clarifying.  I'm pretty sure the pie chart request has been made to the Connect site already.  They will not be in the Denali release.

  • I'm sorry it should have read the lack of pie charts, it was pretty late when I wrote that.  Good to hear that you have a couple of surprises in store.
