iFilter for .csv files RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there an iFilter for .csv files for SharePoint 2007, or does anyone know how to 'trick' SharePoint into doing a full-text search of .csv files?

  • There is not an iFilter specifically for CSV files that I'm aware of, but I do have a couple of resources that you may find useful:
    • http://blogs.msdn.com/tehnoonr/archive/2009/01/02/getting-csv-files-indexed-and-searchable-in-sps-2003.aspx - This is very interesting. CSV files are basically text files, and what this article describes is how to configure a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (the previous version of MOSS) server to index CSV files as it they were TXT files. The author says that the process for MOSS is very similar and that he may do a post on that for the future, so you may want reach out to him for those details. Please note that this will require to make registry updates on your server, which should be handled delicately.
    • http://blogs.msdn.com/ifilter/ - This is a blog on MSDN about general search iFilters and how they interact with Microsoft's search products. They don't seem to have any references for CSV options, but it may be worth keeping an eye on or posting a question to about your needs.
    • http://www.ifiltershop.com - a third party provider of search iFilters. They don't list a CSV product on their website, but again you may be able to inquire with them about what they may have in the works or in the way of a custom solution.
