Need attachments in RTF format RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Random question!  Is there anyway to get all the attachments sent to a particular mailbox to be converted to RTF format either before it is delivered or reattached to the orginal email once it has landed in the inbox?  Is there anyway it can be automated to just present the attachments as RTF format in the email.  We get lots of attachments such as PDF, DOCX, BMP etc and we need them to be RTF attachments rather than anything else.  I was hoping something could be placed either before exchange or alongside it to convert the attachments on the fly or reattach them the attachments to the original email.

    I am on Exchange 2010 STD running on a Server 2008 R2.

Thanking you in advance for your help and time.

    Best Regards,
    JNandhi

  • JNandhi,

Exchange doesn't have any native way to convert files between formats. You'd have to create/alter a file format converter. There may be two ways to do this with Exchange:

    1. You might be able to use Transport Agents to get the attachments in transport, capture the emails with attachments, access the attachment stream and convert the file, and resubmit the mail to the transport pipe. I have no idea if this is really an option.
    2. You can use EWS to find items with attachments, get the attachment stream, convert the file format, delete the old attachment from the item, and upload the new converted attachment to the item. You'd need to have an application that monitors all of the mailboxes for any changes.

  • Hi JNandhi.  You won't get a better answer than Michael's :-)  I'm afraid that if this is something you really need, then you'll need to hire a coder to create a solution for you.
