  • Question

  • Considering the amount of space Microsoft.Net.Framework2 takes up (over 1m MB) and rarely used on MY computer can I remove it without doing any damage to the computer? With WindowsXP.

  • Two things to know:

    1. If you remove a .NET Framework, any installed programs that need the version you remove will no longer work.

    2. In the case of .NET 2.0, things get a bit more complicated, because .NET 3.0 and 3.5 are extensions to 2.0 (2.0 is the base, full, framework and 3.0 and 3.5 are extensions to 2.0, so you cannot remove 2.0 without removing 2.0 and 3.5 as well). Removing 2.0 means you lose 3.0 and 3.5 as well.

So if you try to remove .NET 2.0, all installed programs that need 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5 will no longer work.

My advice, leave well enough alone unless you are 100% sure that you have NO programs that need .NET 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5. Programs often used that need .NET: Internet Explorer and some 3rd party web browsers, Microsoft Office, many others.
