You cannot set the view state programatically, but you can respond to an event. Check out this answer http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winappswithcsharp/thread/97773883-d816-46cd-8c75-1d05dcac01ab/.
Once you detect that your application view state has been changed, you should update your controls.
