SQL 2008 SApasswprd locked, need to move to a new SQL server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a legacy SQL 2008 DB that is in Mixed mode authentication.  The SA password is locked and no-one knows what it might be.

I need to move the data to a new server.  Is there a way to unlock the Database password?  And failing that can I shut down the SQL Engine and move the data over and connect to the DB files on the new server.

    thanks in advance!

  • The easier way is to unlock / reset pwd for "sa": Connect to SQL Server when system administrators are locked out

  • Hi BWDenver,

    >> The SA password is locked and no-one knows what it might be.

Please  follow blow steps to recover sa password.
    1. Add -m or –f in the startup parameters to start SQL Server in single user mode.
    2. connect SQL server as local administrator
    3. add necessary accounts or reset sa password
    4. Remove -m or –f in the startup parameters to restart the server in normal mode.

Please refer to this blog Recover a lost SA password.
