VS 2017 and the direction of LESS compiling

    Question

  • I have been using VS 2013 since its release. The major reason behind this is because VS 2013 was the last version that supported the web essentials addon that was fully featured. For VS 2015, Mads Kristensen decided to split up the functionality and put the LESS compiling functionality in a new addon titled Web Compiler.

This addon, is inferior to the 2013 version as you have to manually add every LESS file to a configuration file so that will be compiled. The preview panel is gone. Task runner needs to be ran to compile the code. It all feels like a downgrade. Its as if it was made difficult just to jump on the bandwagon of the latest javascript based task runner/package manager. Many people have been complaining about it for over a year, yet it hasn't changed.

I am kind of surprised why functionality would be stripped away unless there was a replacement for this addon and I am wondering if there is a new direction for LESS support in visual studio. I would like to move to newer versions of VS, but I'd really like LESS just to compile on save without any work of adding every single less file to a configuration file. VS 2013 just worked. VS 2015 on the other hand...lots of grunt work just to have all your LESS compiling.

  • Hi DuelingCats,

Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.

For your question, I did a research to check if there is any addon about the LESS compiling support on VS 2017, but didn't find an appropriate one, so I try to do a test to see the Web Compiler could apply to the VS 2017 RC version.

On my Vmas, both installed VS 2015 and VS 2017 RC, the Web Compiler could only detect the VS Enterprise 2015, the VS 2017 RC version doesn't show up, please see:

The Web Compiler is a third-party addon to VS, if it is really important for you to use this function, you may write a review about it to ask for requirement could be compatible with VS 2017 RC:

Since currently the VS 2017 RC version is just released, it's for Beta using. the VS 2017 RTM hasn't come out yet, would you mind wait patiently till the Production release ships, to check if the LESS support is on VS 2017 RTM. Or some other develop will develop the Web Compiler which could install in it.

    Thank you for your understanding.
