Wi-Fi Channel Control Doesn't Seem t Work RRS feed

  • Question

  • On Windows 7 I have two 802.11 adapters that claim t0 operate in 802.11 Network Monitor mode. Using MS Network Monitor 3.3 I can set the 802.11 Network Monitor checkbox and can collect Native 802.11 packets.

HOWEVER, the controls that seem to be intended to allow selection of the PHY type, channel number, etc. Don't seem to work. For example, selecting a channel other than Channel 1 doesn't work; the channel immediatly reverts to Channel 1.

    Is this a known fault?

Are there any 802.11 adapters that actually support the mandatory 802.11 NetMon operational mode features.

Seems a pretty useless NetMon 3.3 feature if you cannot actually control the PHY, channel, etc.

TIA for any thoughts that you might pass my way.

  • Here's a complete list of all wireless adapters that passed the lastest Logo tests.  Keep in mind that OEMs can rebrand and create new drivers, so there's always a chance an OEM can change the compatability.  Also, I'm still trying to verify that this specific functionallity is tested for wireless monitor mode.  I'm also going to attempt to find a device to test myself, but I can't say how lucky I'll get in that regard.

  • Thomas, I just tried on my personal HP Pavillion laptop.  I had Windows 7 installed, and then install NM3.3 on top of that.  I was then able to go into the WiFi Scanning options, sleect "Switch to Monitor Mode" and then set my channel to what ever I wanted.  I was also to change phy type to a, and select another channel.

    Are your steps similar?

Did you install NM3 after Win7?

What type of Wireless network card to you have?

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Currently using several. One is the D-Link WUA-1340 USB adapter. It uses the latest NDIS 6.20 Native 802.11 miniport driver from Windows Update. I had hoped to use it because I _thought_ it would work with the WDK USBWIFI sample - but it doesn't. So far I haven't found an adapter that matches the WDK sample. :-(

Also testing with Netgear WN111v2. It uses a NDIS 6.0 Native 802.11 miniport driver. It reports itself as supporting the monitor operation mode.

I have spent most of the time testing on the D-Link.

I have D-Link DWA-552 PCI and D-Link DWA-556 PCIe that shuld be compatible with the WDK ATHWIFI samples - but I haven't tried these yet.

Basically if Monitor Mode doesn't work with some (at least one...) USB adapter then it's pretty hard to use in the field.

Started with clean install of Windows 7 RTM. Then installed the latest (i.e, the current) NM 3.3.

I appreciate any advice you may have.

Below are traces of NetMon 3.3 attempting to set the OIDs on the card. You can see that setting of Channel 7 appeared to be successful BUT when channel was querried later it had quietly reverted to Channel 1 (which agrees exactly with what is seen on NetMon 3.3 UI.

I am trying to develop some automated Wi-Fi diagnostic tools...

    TIA,

    Thomas F. Divine

  • I think you might be getting at a point where a hardware forum might serve you better.  Basically Network Monitor is designed to work with an wireless NIC that has passed the Windows Logo Kit 1.0c.  I believe you should be able to ask the manufacture if they've passed this certification.

I will see if I can find somebody who can interpret the logging you sent.

  • Thanks for the reply, Paul.

The driver was downloaded from Windows Update, so it should be logoed I would think.

It is of interest to Network Monitor forum in the sense that NetMon doesn't work as advertised because: 1.) NetMon broken or 2.) adapter miniport broken.

I think we both know the vendor will never answer.

If someone at MS has the answer, then it would be nice to know it, but...

  • Hi Thomas,

Which adapter is giving you the most trouble at the moment?  Are you trying to sniff on an 'n' network?  As we currently only support monitor mode for a/b/g in 3.3.

Do you think you could post some screenshots of what's not working in the configuration dialog?

    Thanks,

  • Currently using several USB adapters without any real success. One is the D-Link WUA-1340 USB adapter. It uses the latest NDIS 6.20 Native 802.11 miniport driver from Windows Update. The driver is V4.0.2.0 dated 6/17/2009.

I also have been using a Netgear RangeMax Wireless-N USB Adapter WN111v2. It's driver is NDIS 6.0. It reports that it supports NetMon mode but doesn't work correctly either.

If you know of any currently-available 802.11 USB adapters that work correctly with NetMon let me know.

Screenshot just shows the channel in bottom right as always Channel 1 regardless of any other settings.

For example, select 'G' only and Channel 7 - reverts to Channel 1. Select the scan options with the 'G' checkbox and all channels checked - always says Channel 1 at the bottom. I do see the mode field (to the left of the Channel field) "flicker" about once a second. That would be the timeout interval and an _attempt_ to change channel I would think.

Not trying to monitor 'N'. Just 'B' and 'G' for now.

    Thanks!

  • Marvell Libertas (USB), Dlink DWL G122d1 being one OEM model is a USB device I know has worked in the past.  The driver tested was 1.0.0.49.  However, I don't know if something might have changed since that point.  I'm still waiting for a response, so hopefully I'll have some more information.

  • Thanks a lot, Paul.

I'm working pretty hard on developing an article about 802.11 diagnostics for NDIS.com. I need to get as much working as I can to get it right.

I sincerely appreciate your responses and hope to hear anything additional that you might hear.

    Warm regards,

  • BTW, did your USB device say "Compatible with Windows 7" on the box?  This is supposed to be the indication that it has passed the test.  If it did say that,  is should follow up with our hardware compatability guys.

  • Paul,

Thanks a lot. Having this sort of list is invaluable. I have a shelf full of 802.11 adapters (USB, PCI, PCIe) with many bought in the last year. I hope that I can find a matrch from this list (but I have my doubts...).

If you have the patience please follow up with a hint as to whether the NetMon mode is really a WHQL requirement.

No, "Compatible with Windows 7" isn't on any boxes that I have...

AND, finding a place to post a CURRENT list of adapters supprting NetMon would be wonderful. You can imagine that in 6 months half of the adapters in the list won't be commercially available and new ones will have appeared to take their place.

    Once again, Thanks!
