Updating SQL Server 2008 R2 Express RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently have SQL Server 2008 r2 Express installed. I'm looking at this page, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30438, and I see various downloads for SP2. How can I update to SP2 and also install SSMSE for the first time? Is there a way to do both at the same time, or must I do it in two different downloads? (That is to say, can I use SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe to accomplish the update to SP2 and the new installation of SSMSE?)

A secondary question: is it recommendable to upgrade to SQL Server 2012 Express? My case is that that I'm developing a website using ASP.NET 4 and MVC 3 in Visual Studio 2010 Express. Will SQL Server 2012 Express work seamlessly with VS 2010 Express? If so, then what is the best way to upgrade to SQL Server 2012 Express? Should I uninstall/reinstall? Also, will web hosting services support SQL Server 2012 right away or will there be lag? I know this is a subjective question and answers will vary by host, but I'm just looking for some general advice...I don't want to upgrade to the latest technology, only to find that many hosts do not yet support it. Thanks!

  • It is recommended to update SQL Server to latest Service Pack, in your case SP2.

In your case you can get SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with Tools, which includes:

    • SQL Server 2008 Database Engine and
    • SQL Server Management Studio Express

    SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe
    or
    SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe

  • For SQL server 2012 express you can do in place upgrade from SQL server 2008 R2 express

To download SQL Server 2013 express

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29062

for patching SQL server express 2008 R2, I would recommend installing SSMS first then

download SQL Server 2008 R2 Service pack 2 and patch all installed features

to download SQL Server 2008 R2 Service pack 2
