How to extend trial version

    Question

  • Hello,

I am taking a Crystal Reports class at American Military University and the version of Visual Studio 2012 is a trial version about to expire. The Microsoft Website has an option to extend the trial version to 90 days but when I click the link it says the URL has expired. Does anyone know how I can extend the trial version so I can finish this class? Thanks for the help.

  • Hi Rob,

Which Microsoft Website do you access and which URL do you click?

We often sign in Visual Studio with a Microsoft account to extend the trial dates. If you don't have a Microsoft account, please create a new one from Microsoft website.

If you have a Microsoft account, please select the Help menu on top of Visual Studio and then choose "Register Product" option. It will pop up a login window which need you provide the Microsoft account information. After you sign in successful, it will extend to 90 days.

  • I tried that. I think because it is VS 2012 it doesn't work. Below is the site the Extend link takes me to:

    go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linked=256273&clcid=0x409

    I end up at:

    Microsoft.com/404.htm

The above just says We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found.

  • Hi Rob,

Which version of Visual Studio 2012 are you using?

If you are using Visual Studio 2012 Express for Web, the registration link has broken. And we have reported this feedback to the VS Product team, if I get any latest information, I will update it here.

I suggest you use Visual Studio 2013 Community or Visual Studio 2015 Community, they are also free, and the registration page is available, you can download from below link.

Visual studio 2013 Express for Web: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=44912

    Visual Studio 2013 Community: https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/news/vs2013-community-vs.aspx

    Visual Studio 2015 Community: https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/products/visual-studio-community-vs.aspx

If you are using Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate, please click below link and type your user information to register for a trial product key.

After you get a trial product key, please input it in Product Key textbox which opened from Help -> Register Product menu in Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate.

  • Thank you for your response. I am using VS 2012 Professional. I tried your link for Ultimate but the key came up invalid in Professional. I can't use 2013 because Crystal Reports doesn't work with anything newer than 2012.

  • Hi Rob,

Yes, we can't use Ultimate key for Professional version of Visual Studio. I suggest your use VS 2012 Ultimate instead of VS 2012 Professional, which has all function. You can get VS2012 Ultimate from below link. After installing, then your can use the key you get before.
