Best Practices for Development Environment Data setup RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a production and development environment separately that load from our production environment data source in 2 separate loads each night. We would like to minimize the space being used in our development environment.

I would appreciate any feedback from other companies on how their development systems are setup.

  • Hi Khan,

Not sure why you want to load data from Production environment to Development Environment.  What we would be doing is having sample representation of sanitised Production data moved to development and use it.

Disk space? Nowadays it is pretty cheap. But if you use EE , take a look into compressing feature.

Just want to add that Developer Edition includes the same features as Enterprise, including data compression (page and row).

  • First tell us version and edition of SQl Server involved. Yes compression can help but what is editions of SQl Server we are talking about.

Dont blindly implement data compression it has both advantages and drawbacks

  • Thanks for all the responses.  We are on version 11.05058.0 SP2 Standard Edition(64-bit).

A little background on the design of our databases:  Staging DB -> ODS DB -> DW DB.   We use etl's to load the data from our ERP system to the Staging DB then to get the data to the ODS and DW we use stored procedures.

Is this DB design considered best practice?  What is the best practice for refreshing a development environment?   Does anyone have a Test Q/A environment if so, how frequently is it refreshed?
