Error "There is a problem saving the file" when opening the VBA Editor RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

When I open the VBA Editor (Developer->Visual Basic) in Word 2019 (Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2019 Version 1812) I get an error message:

    "Word has encountered a problem"

"There is a problem saving the file."

The error message says nothing about which file it is trying to save. I don't have any space problems on any of my drives, but OneDrive is blocked on our network.

This means that I can't add VBA code to my file nor can I record any macros. VBA works fine in Excel.

How to I fix this problem?

  • Hi Lars_DK,

    Can't you "Repair" Office 2019?

The below is how to repair Office 2016 (I don't have 2019).
      (1) Control Panel --[Programs] > [Programs and Features]
      (2) select [Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016] (2019 in your case)
and click [Change] (upper side of program list)

I guess you can choose [Quick Repair] or [Online Repair].
Firstly do [Quick Repair]. Do [Online Repair], if [Quick Repair] does not have effect.

  • Hi,

I've heard Office 365 (2019) uses OneDrive as a default save location.
How about it, if you save your Word file in your local drive, instead in OneDrive? And what happens, in case of Excel file? (I guess it doesn't depend on Word/Excel and on with/without VBA.)

  • Hi

I'm using a "real" office 2019 not Office 365 in case that makes any difference, but I'm logged into my account.

I get this error even if I only have a blank unsaved document open.

Under Options->Save I've set all default locations to be on the local computer and there is a checkmark in "Save to computer by default".

Under Options->Advanced I've tried to put a check mark in "prompt before saving Normal template" without any change in behaviour.

In Excel the VBA editor and execution of the VBA code work as expected.

  • Hi Ashidacchi

I did a quick repair, which didn't help.

    An online repair worked.

    Thanks!
