Removed group based license assignment - user stuck with "orpaned" inheritance

    Question

  • Using the new Azure Portal, I removed assignment for the license "Azure AD Basic" from the synced AD group "Office" in which "UserX" is a member (together with ~ 50 other users).

The license was sucessfully removed from all users, except “UserX” which still has “Inherited (Office)” under “Assignment Paths” for the license. The state of the license says “Active with errors”.

When I look at the assignments for the license “Azure AD Basic” it is no longer assigned to any users or groups.

This “orphaned” assignment prevents me from assigning a Azure AD premium” licenses to “UserX” with the error “Conflicting Service Plans”. All other users have been migrated to the new license.

    Any ideas?

  • Found a solution:

Assigned license "Azure AD Basic" back to "Office" but with no enabled services. Let changes propagate. Then removed the assignment again and the orphaned inheritance was gone!
