  • Hi RH,

The link below shows Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2008:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(SQL.100).aspx

If you are installing SQL Server 2008 Developer (64-bit) x64, then both Windows 7 64-bit x64 Home Basic/Home Premium are supported.  This is true for BIDS 2008 too.

If you are buying a new laptop then I would strongly recommend 64-bit CPU only.

    Hope this helps!

  • I agree. If you plan to run these services alongside Visual Studio, you're going to need a boatload of RAM. I suggest 2GB at a minimum but would install 3.5GB (and no more) on a 32-bit system and 4GB-6GB on a 64-bit system. My system (used for demos and PPT) has 16GB and an 8-core processor. It still works pretty hard at times.
