  • Hello Bhaskar,

Yes, you can install SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 Side by Side on the same server. You can install either SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008 as a default instance and the other as a named instance.

Read the following Install SQL Server 2005 article which is a step by step guide to install SQL Server 2005.

Note: If you have Visual Studio 2008 already installed on the server then you will get a validation error and you will not be able to install SQL Server 2008 until you have installed Visual Studio 2008 SP1. If there is no installation of Visual Studio 2008 on the server then you will not face any issues.

    Hope that Helps!

Install SQL Server 2008 as a default instance including client tools and only install Database Engine, SSAS, SSRS and Integration Services of SQL Server 2005 as a named instance (dont install client components)

    Hope this helps!

  • No, it could be messy. Install only client tools of the lastest version do not mess up BIDS 2005 and BIDS 2008 for example
