Excel 2016 (locally installed) does not register in the COM running object table any more?

    Question

  • Hello everybody,

in several applications, we use the .net GetObject() function to get to an *already running* instance of Word or Excel. As of today (but probably at least several days or weeks without having tried), this does not work any more for Excel 2016 running on Windows 10 (all currently patched). GetObject(, "Word.Application") works fine and gives me the already running instance, but GetObject(, "Excel.Application") always creates a new instance.

Switching focus, as suggested in https://support.microsoft.com/de-de/help/238610/getobject-or-getactiveobject-cannot-find-a-running-office-application, did not help.

Is this an intended behavior change in Excel, or is it a regression bug? Word in ROT, Excel not? Thanks for any help.

  • Hello everybody,

as my boot disk failed, I reinstalled everything - and cannot reproduce the problem any more. So we can consider this as "solved", even if I don't know why the problem started.
