The components for communicating with ftp servers are not installed.

    Question

  • I'm facing following error for several years in almost all vs versions since 2012 whenever I publish web project. Currently I'm using vs for web 2015 express.

Unable to open the web site: "ftp://domainname.com". The components for communicating with ftp servers are not installed.

I don't know why it appear and why it goes. I seems like error reside somewhere in cache and whenever I reconnect to Internet or restart system, it try to connect again and if connection establish, error goes. Anyone could explain more about this error and suggest right solution?

  • Hi developerAdeel,

    Thanks for your response.

    >>I shall like to say it again that other projects connect fine with ftp server at the same time when one project create problem

So the problem is just occurs with this one specific project, is it right? Please create a new project and then move project files to the new project one by one to check which file cause this issue.

    >>And that problematic project also connects sometime with ftp server after I restart my pc.

I think there may be something affect your project on your computer environment. I suggest you change another computer to check whether this issue related to your computer environment.

    >>I may not followed other tips you give. Now I'm using filezilla for uploading files and facing no problem, therefore I didn't try to repair/install again.

Since you have found a workaround, if you don't want to try other tips, could you please mark your reply as answer which provide a workaround. It is benefit to other communities who has the same problem. In addition, you can add your comments to submit this issue on Visual Studio Connect. Thanks for your feedback.

  • Hi Weiwei,

Thank you for your answer. I do not have any old vs version running on this machine, however I do have visual studio 2015 for windows desktop running on this machine. Therefore, both vs 2015 for web and vs 2015 for windows desktop running on same machine. Do you mean I should uninstall windows desktop version in order to make web version work fine?

I'm facing another problem that comes suddenly for no reason while using visual studio 2015. Sometime when I start and then stop project, it keep running in background and consume resources 98%. I find no way to stop it else than close visual studio and then go to task manager and kill process. What is this? I think iis10 express is creating all these troubles. I shall give you feedback again after repairing visual studio 2015 for web.

  • Hi developerAdeel,

    Thanks for your feedback.

    >>Do you mean I should uninstall windows desktop version in order to make web version work fine?

Uninstall another version of Visual Studio is a troubleshooting step so that prevent the effect from these version of Visual Studio.

    >>Sometime when I start and then stop project, it keep running in background and consume resources 98%. I find no way to stop it else than close visual studio and then go to task manager and kill process. What is this?

When we open Visual Studio, it will load all components and other resources that Visual Studio needed. And if you open a project, besides load components and resources Visual Studio need, it also need loading some packages that project need. All of these will consume resources.

    >>I repaired vs2015 for web ... no luck!

Please use http://aka.ms/vscollect  to gather the VS and .Net Frameowrk installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.cab from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to Onedrive and share the link here.

  • Dear Weiwei,

    Thank you for your answer.

Uninstalling vs for windows desktop and repairing vs for web shall cost me at least one day and I'm already working on some projects. It was easier to install filezilla and upload work on server, I did so. However gathered logs as per your suggestion, here is link: [I'm unable to give link here, do you have other option to share log?]

I shall like to explain once again that sometime when I press start button in visual studio 2015 for web and compilation start, it keep up working at back-end, consume resources even if I stop it. My system goes heat up and batteries consume quickly. I tried to find remedy but couldn't succeed. Now whenever I meet this problem (so often), I find no option else than close vs, go to task manager and kill process, then start vs again. None of previous vs version had such problem as per my experience and I'm using vs since 2005.

  • Dear Weiwei,

I have no problem in giving link here for download so that you or anyone else could collect information, however when I give link here and press submit, a message box appears and say I cannot give link or image unless my account is verified. That is why I asked for other option. How Microsoft shall verify my account?

  • Hi developerAdeel,

According to your installation log, I found following errors that several package failed to download and install in your installation log file.

Error 0x80048646: Failed to execute EXE package.
Error 0x80048646: Failed to configure per-machine EXE package.

For this situation, to eliminate internet variables, I suggest download a healthy VS 2015 iso image to repair your VS first.

VS 2015 iso Microsoft official download link:
    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs.aspx
VS 2015 iso files SHA-1 Values link:
    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/visual-studio-2015-iso-sha1-vs.aspx

PS: To make sure whether your package is corrupted or not,
please use FCIV.exe http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290  to verify hash of the ISO.
Any discrepancy would indicate that the file was corrupted.

Besides, in order to narrow down the problems of VS setup, there are some tips about installing VS:
    1. Disable anti-virus or anti-spyware software.
    2. Check windows update.
    3. Clear %TEMP% folder.
    4. Run the installer as administrator.
you should make sure you’ve followed these tips:  http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vssetup/thread/60f71a54-506e-4c70-be98-e993ce6d1ddf

If still has this problem, I suggest you restore your Windows or change another computer to check whether this problem caused by computer environment.

If new computer environment still exist, this problem, I'm afraid it is may be a problem with Visual Studio 2015. I recommend add comments to the feedback that other communities has submit and then waiting for the report team experts give you the response.

  • Dear Weiwei,

I'm sorry for late answer and thanks for being with me and giving your time and expertise in detecting the problem.

Dear, when I first installed and repaired vs2015, I did it online from visualstudio.com as you suggest. I don't know why some files missed. I may not followed other tips you give. Now I'm using filezilla for uploading files and facing no problem, therefore I didn't try to repair/install again. I shall like to say it again that other projects connect fine with ftp server at the same time when one project create problem. And that problematic project also connects sometime with ftp server after I restart my pc.

    Best Regards,

    Adeel
