outicon.exe mysteriously appears as (new) Project in VS 2005 RRS feed

  • Question

  • This morning, when I started Visual Studio 2005, I was startled to see an unknown project - outicon.exe. I tried closing the project but to no avail. The icon for outicon.exe resembles the icon for the Outlook shortcut. Some urgent questions:

    • How did outicon.exe get embedded in VS 2005?
    • How do I remove it from VS 2005?

My investigations of outicon.exe on the Web provide no clear-cut answers - some say it is benign, others harmful.

Help is solicited and will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Answers

  • If you search outicon.exe via google, you will see it is likely to be some malware (camouflage as outicon.exe). You may use some removal to remove it.

    Thanks.

  • The information is saved at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ProjectMRUList.

  •  Thanks. This tells me how to close/delete projects in Visual Studio if they are not amenable to normal closure. But there's also the question of how OUTICON.EXE was added as a project in the first place? Is this a known problem?

Below are the properties of the OUTICON.EXE project in VS2005:

        Command = C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}\outicon.exe

        Working Directory = C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}\outicon.exe

Do I need to scan/clean the Registry?

  • Can you see it in Add/Remove programs?

If it is useless you can remove it from the machine.
And to delete it from the recent projects in VS you can edit HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ProjectMRUList.

    Thanks.

  • No, I cannot see the culprit project, OUTICON.EXE, in Add/Remove programs. Could it be a virus? Web sites that discuss this executable are ambivalent on the subject - some say it is benign, others say it is a virus. Some others think it requires "cleaning" the Registry. I would be grateful if a representative of Microsoft can sound-off on this issue authoriitatively.

    Thanks.
