ITV.com launches Silverlight video player RRS feed

  • Question

  • For those of us who are interested in Silverlight examples or competitive intelligence:

The UK's largest commercial media/TV company, ITV, recently added a very nice inline video player (Silverlight 2) to their market-leading homepage. It's light-weight, fast, and perfectly delivers the intended user experience. Initialising the player in a way that looks like just another part of the web page is an interesting idea. I believe they are using SL2 as their primary solution, with Flash as a fallback via a browser sniff during the transition period as we all wait for market penetration of SL2 to increase.

P.S. Microsoft - isn't it time you started promoting SL with a big ad campaign? It would really help out us developers here on the front-line where some users still haven't heard of Silverlight and some decision-makers within businesses are still very cautious. ;)

  • That's great news - nice to see them adopt it so quickly after RTW.

The slight disaapointment though is that I don't see it making much of an impact in it's current form on take up because with no Silverlight installed, it falls back to Flash (as you say), so there is no prompt for the user to install.  Even with both Flash and Silverlight not installed, it only gives the prompt to install Flash - nothing for Silverlight.

Maybe this is a testing phase for those with Silverlight already installed and they will prompt later once they are satisfied with the performance?
