  • Hi PGCleveland,

  • Hello, I tried last night to download the install from the website using IE, but that stalled as well.  It all seems to stop at 4.0

  • Hi PGCleveland,

    Thank you for your post.

    Some clarification with you

1, could you please clarify your error information on your reply or upload your error log files via Skydrive?

2, could you please download .net framework 4 from Microsoft and install .net framework 4 separately?

I would recommend that you could download .net framework 4 from the following link.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0a391abd-25c1-4fc0-919f-b21f31ab88b7

After you have installed .net framework 4 on your machine, please run Visual Studio 2010 Express installer again.

If you have any issues during installation, please upload your latest error log files in your reply via Skydrive.

    Look forward for your reply!

    Best Regards

  • Hi PGCleveland,

    Glad to see your reply.

Firstly, .NET Framework 4.0 is supported on the following Windows XP related OS:

    Windows XP Home Edition SP3
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP3
    Windows XP Professional SP3

More information about .NET Framework 4, you could refer the following link.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a391abd-25c1-4fc0-919f-b21f31ab88b7&displaylang=en#Requirements

After .NET Framework is installed successfully on your machine, you could run your Visual Studio 2010 as follows.

    - Download .NET Framework 4.0 Standalone installer
Note: You can try some download manager software to help downloading.
    - Run the installer to install .NET 4.0 with Administrator Privilege
Note: Right-click the installer >> "Run as Administrator"

If the problem still exists, could you please follow the following steps to collect the log files?
    - Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%")
    - Install .NET Framework 4.0
(The installer must be run with administrator privileges)
    - Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder
       Collect tool:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e0da314f-6216-4a18-bc6b-7d29cf83af20&displaylang=en

    - You could upload vslogs.cab files via Skydrive.

The following link is similar like yours. You could refer it.

  • Hi PGCleveland,

    Glad to see your follow-up.

From your vslog files, I found some errors as follows.

[08/22/10,17:32:10] Microsoft .NET Framework 4: [2] Error code 1603 for this component means "Fatal error during installation.

[08/22/10,17:32:10] Microsoft .NET Framework 4: C:\DOCUME~1\Paul\LOCALS~1\Temp\30319.01\1033\VCS_EXP\wcu\dotnetframework\dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe exited with return value 1603

Could you please verify whether .NET Framework 4 is installed correctly on your machine or not?

You could verify it via Verification Tool.

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx

If .net framework is installed correctly on your machine, please refer the following link, which is similar with yours.

  • Hi PGCleveland,

In your log files, I found some errors like the following.

[08/30/10,09:47:50] Not running action 'Registry GE - .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (Wow6432Node)' for product '.NET Framework 3.5 SP1' because the OS condition does not match

In most cases, you can use the entry in Add/Remove Programs to repair the .NET Framework 3.5 or 3.5 SP1.  If that doesn’t help, then you can use the steps in this blog post to remove and then re-install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

    See: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2010/01/26/9953883.aspx for more information.

  • Hi PGCleveland,

As your screenshot, it seems that the installer cannot find some setup components in .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

Have you extracted .NET Framework to your local?

I would encourage that you could download .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package) from the following link.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d0e5dea7-ac26-4ad7-b68c-fe5076bba986&displayLang=en

Then, run as administrator and try to install it again.

  • Hi PGCleveland,

From your error information, please check whether you have FULL CONTROL access vs_setup.dll.

Then, please check whether your downloaded vs installation file is right or not.

I would encourage that you could open a new thread to consult your concern here.

I think that more members will participate to help you.

  • Ok,

Sorry to keep you waiting... I have good news but not great news :)

I again formatted my hdd and did a clean install

1 ) I ran all updates per the MS Update Server

    2) Then I Installed .Net Framework Client 4.x Install

    3) Then I Installed .Net Framework 4.x Full Extended

    4) A system reboot just for good measure

    5) I then ran the MS .Net Framework Validation tool... It Stated .Net Framework 4 V. 4.0.30319.1 was confirmed and OK...

    6) Then took a deep breath and dared Call MS Help Desk Again... :p

    7) I recieved a call about one hour after I called again from a MS Tech Today Who was very paitent, present, and a great listener

    8) I was able to let him know that my system was clean Fresh install, no third party drivers or apps. ( NOT EVEN a Firewall, Spyware or antivirus app running NOTHING) He listened as I explained that this happened every time I tried to install any of the following: Nero 10, MS Live Essentials, Sim-City 4, MS Expression Studio 4 Ult and so on....

    9) He asked if he could attach to my machine and have control of mouse and system I.E. Registry, AppData, System Logs, and of course all .Net Framework configuration files and logs generated at the time of install.  He was able to get the package install I.D's of the actual MS Update stand alone & full extended 4.x installers

    10) He then asked me to download the 60 day trial of the App and try to install that... So that he could rule out a corrupt install / xsetup.exe found on the CD... I did just so and well I got the same error so now we know it is truly a .Net Framework error of some sort.

    11) He explained to me that he felt as though there was a problem (possibly) in the install package for certain Build Numbers of Windows.... He said that he did not feel that it was an issue of .x32 V.S. .x64 O.S.'s ... or even .Net Framework .x32 V.S. .x64 installer; but rather an error of the 4.x installer / packages. He assured me that he was again going to elevate this to an entire group of persons responsible for dealing with .Net Framework install and con-fig issues.... He then PROMISED that I would hear form him within forty eight hours....

OK sorry for typing you to tears, I felt it best to try and relay to you as much and as clearly as possible... I hope this helps and yes I will post A.S.A.P as I learn more... I have a feeling that this issue may be addressed... and I will add that the tech who did the investigating tried 3-4 four times to run the x-setup after tweaking my PC a bit.... and he saw first hand the 4.0.4 .Net Framework error for himself...
