Too large for IDE bus RRS feed

  • Question

  • Got a friend who's try to create a new virtual XP instance on his Windows 7 pro box.  I got mine to work but when he tries to create his from a vhd image of his entire XP box it says the vhd is too large for the IDE Bus and cannot create it.  His vhd file is just 62gig.  He's getting the error that the vhd is too large for the IDE bus and the creation of the virtual drive fails.

    TIA

  • Virtual PC is limited to a disk size of 127G, most likely your friends
disk is bigger than that, even though it looks smaller from the VHD size.

To do this the same way, you'd have to shrink the partitions down to
what would fit on a 127G disk before you created the VHD.

  • you're right! the vhd was only 60g but the image was from a harddrive with 250gb size.  So your 127gb limit means that the hard drive potential has to be less than  127 of the hard drive partition needs to be reduced to below the 127 limit.
