How can I create a shared document library where a master doc auto-updates its sibling docs which live in other libraries? RRS feed

  • Hi.  I want to create a way to have one document (a Word or PowerPoint file) live in multiple doc libraries within the SAME site (but different sub-sites) so that when I make changes to one (the master doc), those changes are reflected in the other docs living in alternate doc libraries.

    Is that possible?

  • I would enable the content type 'Link to Document' on your subsite document libraries, and use that to link to the 'official' document. Then there is no need to do any synchronization of documents - you only have the one and everything else looks at it.

    On your libraries where you want to see the master doc, List Settings -> Advanced Settings, enable management of content types. Then add the site content type 'Link to a Document'. You'll now find that under the 'New Document' button on the Document ribbon - use that to enter the URL of the master document.
