DCPROMO & ADPREP RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I run DCPROMO to add an existing domain (windows pop up) need to install adprep. I've ran the DOS command and displays: Run Adprep on a "Active Directory Domain Controller". What do I do now? To promote server to a domain controller? thank you.

  • Sounds like you are adding a DC which is a different version than your schema.  Run the command below then check to see if your schema matches the OS you are installing.  Also you may have the common "Opps I mislabeled my DVD/ISO mistake" check the System Properties page to ensure you are running the intended OS.  It is common for people to label an install without writing R2 on the label.

    Get-ADObject (get-adrootdse).schemaNamingContext -Property objectVersion

The table below shows Active Directory schema versions.

    Windows 2000 Server 13
    Windows 2003 RTM, SP1, SP2 30
    Windows 2003 R2 31
    Windows 2008 44
    Windows 2008 R2 47
    Windows Server 2012 Beta 52
    Windows Server 2012 56
     Windows Server 2012 R2 69

  • My current domain controller:

Windows Server Standard without Hyper-V // Service pack 2

2nd server to add as a domain controller:

    2008 R2 Standard // Service Pack 1

I don't understand?  When do I enter the command:

    Get-ADObject (get-adrootdse).schemaNamingContext -Property objectVersion
