Azure Premium Storage vs. Standard Storage RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I need Azure storage to store Blobs.

Other than faster SSD storage, Is there any API differences between Azure Premium and Standard Storage? I am looking for Blob storage and retrieval scenarios.

    Thank you,

  • Hi -

The API works against both types of storage. The only difference between premium and standard storage is the type of disk.

  • Hi amx2012,

What kind of Blob storage and retrieval scenarios are you looking for?

Premium Storage is used for Page Blobs, which are usually VHD files that back the OS and Data disks for an IaaS VM. This kind of storage is SSD's and is really fast.

Standard Storage is used for block blobs and append blobs, and can be used to store any kind of files.

    Which are you looking for?

  • I am looking into blocks. I was wondering if there is any API change that cause my C# code stop working if we configure my application to point to a SSD Blob.

    Thank  you,

  • Hi,

You can't store block blobs in Premium Storage. Premium Storage is used almost exclusively for VHD files stored as Page Blobs. If it's a blob you need to read from an application, you pretty much have to use Standard Storage.
