POP3 broken in Outlook 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Multiple computers.  All running Windows 7 or Vista or XP.  All fail the same way.  The problem is that Outlook 2010 gives up after it get's a failed CAPA response.  All other versions of Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Live Mail do not.  So if your POP Server does not support CAPA you are SOL.  You either have to enable SSL or use IMAP or something else.  It will even fail trying to talk to Windows 2003 POP service.

outlook does not work with windows server 2003 pop3 service

It will also fail if you have POP inspection enabled on your Cisco router.  All other POP email clients will work including all the Microsoft email clients.  It is only Outlook 2010 that fails.

two things I hate about outlook including POP3 failure

    According to RFC2449 page 4,

    RFC2449 standards document

"An -ERR response indicates the capability command is not implemented and the client will have to probe for capabilities as before."

So it appears that Outlook 2010 is not compliant with RFC2449.
